WIFO-Konjunkturtest

The WIFO-Konjunkturtest (business cycle survey) is a monthly survey of Austrian companies on their economic situation and its development in the coming months. The results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest help to reliably assess the economic development in Austria at an early stage. The WIFO-Konjunkturtest has been conducted since 1954 and has been part of the "Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys" since 1996.

Die Ergebnisse des WIFO-Konjunkturtests zeigen im Dezember eine weitere Stabilisierung der insgesamt nach wie vor skeptischen Konjunkturbeurteilungen der österreichischen Unternehmen. Der WIFO-Konjunkturklimaindex notierte mit –5,8 Punkten (saisonbereinigt) zwar um 1,2 Punkte über dem Wert des Vormonats (7,0 Punkte), blieb aber weiter im pessimistischen Bereich. Die Lagebeurteilungen verbesserten sich leicht gegenüber dem Vormonat. Die Konjunkturerwartungen verschlechterten sich wieder geringfügig und signalisieren weiterhin skeptische Konjunkturausblicke. Das skeptische Konjunkturbild wird nach wie vor von der sehr schwachen Industrie- und Baukonjunktur bestimmt, während sich die Stimmung unter den Dienstleistern aufzuhellen beginnt.

Economy with Uneven Momentum at the End of the Year. Results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest (Business Cycle Survey) of December 2023
The results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest (Business Cycle Survey) of December show a further stabilisation of the still sceptical economic assessment of Austrian companies. At –5.8 points (seasonally adjusted), the WIFO economic climate index was 1.2 points above the value of the previous month (–7.0 points), but remained in the pessimistic range. The assessment of the current situation improved slightly compared to the previous month. Economic expectations deteriorated again slightly and continue to signal a sceptical economic outlook. The sceptical economic picture continues to be dominated by the very weak industrial and construction sectors, while the mood among service providers is starting to brighten up.
