WIFO-Konjunkturtest

The WIFO-Konjunkturtest (business cycle survey) is a monthly survey of Austrian companies on their economic situation and its development in the coming months. The results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest help to reliably assess the economic development in Austria at an early stage. The WIFO-Konjunkturtest has been conducted since 1954 and has been part of the "Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys" since 1996.

Die Ergebnisse des WIFO-Konjunkturtests zeigen im September trotz einer Seitwärtsbewegung weiterhin pessimistische Konjunkturbeurteilungen. Der WIFO-Konjunkturklimaindex notierte mit –8,4 Punkten (saisonbereinigt) um 0,3 Punkte über dem Wert des Vormonats (–8,7 Punkte). Die Lagebeurteilungen verloren mit Ausnahme der Dienstleistungen in allen Branchen weiter leicht an Dynamik und notieren insbesondere in der Sachgütererzeugung nach wie vor tief im negativen Bereich. Die Konjunkturerwartungen verbesserten sich hingegen leicht, signalisieren aber über die Branchen hinweg weiterhin pessimistische Konjunkturausblicke. Die Verkaufspreiserwartungen gingen in der Sachgütererzeugung weiter zurück, blieben aber in den Dienstleistungen und im Einzelhandel leicht überdurchschnittlich.

Economic Outlook Remains Mostly Pessimistic. Results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest (Business Cycle Survey) of September 2023
Despite a sideways movement, the results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest (business cycle survey) continue to show pessimistic economic assessments in September. The WIFO Business Climate Index stood at –8.4 points (seasonally adjusted), 0.3 points above the value of the previous month (–8.7 points). With the exception of services, assessments of the current situation continued to lose some momentum in all sectors and remain deeply negative, especially in manufacturing. Economic expectations, on the other hand, improved slightly but continue to signal a pessimistic economic outlook across all sectors. Sales price expectations continued to decline in manufacturing, but remained slightly above average in services and retail.
