The Economic Impact of Thermal Spa Tourism in Austria

This study is dedicated to the economic and regional importance of thermal spa tourism in Austria. The nominal revenues of the 39 spas analysed amounted to around 432 million € in 2019. The businesses concerned employed an annual average of around 5,400 persons in 2019, which corresponds to 4,600 full-time equivalents according to survey and projection data. According to a (conservative) estimate, thermal spa tourism in Austria is responsible for a value added of around 1.2 billion € in 2019, directly, indirectly and induced, and for an employment contribution of around 17,700 persons (based on full-time equivalents). In addition, thermal spa tourism generates revenues for social insurance institutions and tax revenues for municipalities, the federal government and the provinces of approximately 455 million €.
