Austria's Aid to the East

  • Jan Stankovsky

Austria's contribution to aid to the East is substantial in an international comparison: Though Austria's GDP was not more than 1 percent of OECD's GDP, Austria's share in bilateral financial committments to the Eastern countries was 2.2 percent, nearly 5 percent of committments to Eastern Europe. Austria's assistance (committments 1992: AS 11.4 billion, payment AS 5.7 billion) consisted mostly of debt restructuring for Poland, export credits, and investment warranties. Measures with a multiplier effect are not well funded. Only AS 841 million were allocated to technical assistance, with most of the funds going to the ecological fund.
