Austria's Trade with the East Faces New Challenges

Austria's economy has to cope with the new realities in Europe. In 1989, Austria applied for membership in the EC; in 1990, Austria faces the difficult task of realigning its economic links with the East. Austrian exports to the East surged in 1988 and 1989, but at the same time indebtedness of the Eastern countries has also risen steeply.
