Trends in Inland Waterway Transportation

The Austrian "Danube Steamship Corporation" DDSG managed to raise productivity strongly over the last twenty years. Transportation volume per employee was almost 4½times higher in 1988 than in 1970. It now exceeds productivity of the German inland waterway navigation which in 1970 was more than twice as high as that of DDSG. Value added is depressed by the low freight rates on the Danube. Thus, in 1988 value added per employee amounted to only 348,000 schilling, the same figure in Germany was 2½times higher.
