The Outlook for 1993 and 1994: Rising Unemployment Despite Slight Economic Recovery

More and more indicators signal that the cyclical movement of Austrian economy has reached its low point. Negative growth in GDP came to a halt during the second half of 1993. The last projection for 1993 (–0.7 percent) proved somewhat too pessimistic. According to most recent estimates, GDP for 1993 was approximately 0.5 percent below the 1992 level. The outlook for 1994, which in September appeared perhaps too optimistic, is now more firmly substantiated. Developments in the international economy have stabilised to the extent that the growth forecast in Austria of 1.5 percent can be upheld.
