Consumption Structure and Tax Burden of Pension Households in Austria 2019-20

18 percent of the Austrian population lived in pension households in 2019-20, which contributed around 20 percent to the consumer demand and just under one-quarter to payroll tax revenue. Their expenditures on goods and services for personal care, social protection, as well as expenditures on health care took a significantly larger share than those of younger households. The total burden on pension households, including consumption and excise taxes, averaged 26.8 percent in 2019. Income taxes accounted for 14 percentage points, indirect taxes for 8.3 percentage points, and social contributions for 4.6 percentage points.
