Successful Register Research in Austria

What Added Value Does the Regulated Opening of Register Data Generate for Scientific Research? A Presentation Based on Three Examples

The benefits of structured access to public administration registers for society and politics are far-reaching, but are often lost in the public discussion. The task for this report was therefore to conduct a potential analysis, that is, to formulate three concrete examples in which the scientific and societal added value of registers accessible to research can be presented and illustrated. The focus is on concrete societal problems addressed by the research, as well as actual and potential impacts of the research results on politics, society and Austria as a science location. This should illustrate why access to register data is of great importance for science, where knowledge gaps exist and what could still be researched by means of access to register data.
