COVID-19 Pandemic: Fewer Summer Jobs for Young People in July

In July 2020, the employment figures improved further compared to the previous months: the reduction in paid employment was 2.1 percent year-on-year, less than half as high as in March and April at the peak of the COVID-19 restrictions. For youths (up to the age of 19) in full-time school-based training, the training-free period offers the opportunity to do a compulsory work placement, as is prescribed as part of the curriculum at vocational schools and colleges, or to take up a holiday job. Current data on employed young people aged up to 19 years indicate a decline of up to 22 percent in the number of holiday work placements for school pupils in July. This is due to the current difficult framework conditions (job cuts, short-time work, home office, distance rules, etc.).
