A New Taxonomy for Classifying Industries According To Their ICT Intensity

Digital transformation affects all sectors of the economy, but to varying degrees. This paper presents a new industry taxonomy that classifies industries according to the share of ICT professionals. The aim is to facilitate the application of the new taxonomy for a broader circle of users by providing a comprehensive but compact documentation of the data, methods and results used. As a result, four groups are classified and reported: ICT manufacturers as well as ICT-using industries with a high, medium and low percentage of ICT specialists. In an international comparison, Austria remains below the median of the countries in terms of its share of total value added in the first two groups with high ICT intensity. In the group of ICT manufacturers, the gap is largest, although a catching-up process can be observed. The value-added share of industries that use ICT intensively is slightly below the median, but has been declining significantly since 2012.
