Tourism Analysis: Strong Demand in Winter to Date, but Little Momentum in Real Turnover

In the first five months of the winter season (November 2023 to March 2024), tourism demand in Austria reached similar peak values as in the same period of 2018-19, with a good 17.6 million arrivals and around 64.5 million overnight stays. Year-on-year, this meant growth of 8.5 percent (arrivals) and 5.6 percent (overnight stays), with the international segment developing much more dynamically (+10.1 and +6.0 percent respectively) than domestic tourism (arrivals +4.5 percent, overnight stays +4.1 percent). However, a sharp rise in prices and an increased propensity to save on the part of guests had a dampening effect on real income, with the result that revenue growth in tourism was unable to keep pace with demand in terms of volume.
