Substudy 6: Population Development and Migration

  • Gudrun Biffl

In view of the continued high level of immigration in the wake of the EU's integration and enlargement, the threat of labour scarcity is being postponed to the more remote future. The labour supply will not stabilise until 2020 to 2030, after which it will be slowly declining. The structural change in the labour supply, especially its ageing, greater ratio of women and multicultural character, poses challenges for society and employment policy. It will be necessary to find new ways to activate and integrate the workers in order to strengthen economic growth, employment growth and social cohesion.
