Hopes for a stronger rebound of activity abroad have been dampened by a deceleration of GDP growth in the U. S. between April and June, and by the latest raise in the German discount rate. In Austria, domestic demand continues to provide firm support, notably construction investment and private consumption. Despite stagnating foreign markets in the West export growth has slightly accelerated as firms seize the new opportunities in neighbouring Eastern countries.
