Development and Distribution of Income in Austria

Between 2000 and 2010 income of employees increased by 2.9 percent p.a. whereas entrepreneurial income and unearned income rose by 4.5 percent p.a. on average. Due to weak economic performance 2010 to 2012 unearned income diminished. After a decline of the labour share in national income over the past decades, we observe an inceasing wage ratio in 2012 and 2013. The personal income distribution is affected by the decline in the share of labour in the national income and by an increase in income disparities within wage incomes themselves. The Gini coefficient is increasing among all employees as well as among employees in full-time jobs and continuous employment. An increase in the number of gainfully employed per household in the lower income strata is not able to compensate for income inequality at the personal level.
