Incomes in Agriculture and Forestry. A Contrasting Juxtaposition of Different Sources

The development of incomes in the agricultural sector can be viewed from various perspectives. The factor income based on the accounts of agriculture is most frequently used. The most important indicator of the annual "Green Report" of the Austrian agricultural minister on farm incomes is "farm and forestry incomes per (self employed) operator". In this report a new perspective on looking at farm incomes is presented: farm household income. Two data sets are available to estimate it: EU-SILC (a panel data set of over 6,000 households) and household information of the farm enterprises covered in the Grenn Report. Calculations using data from both sets show that households with predominant farm income generally have lower equivalent incomes than the median household.
