Work Forms in Austria: Legal and Quantitative Aspects

For the last ten years, the Austrian labour market has been characterised by an increasing number of legal changes, especially in the area of social security law, leading to a diversification of labour market forms. Seen in a European context, the various structures encompassing the labour market in Austria all emphasise social security to a relatively strong degree. An empirical analysis of the various labour market forms, such as full-time and part-time employment, self-employment, temporary work and hybrid forms spanning aspects of both employment and self-employment, on the basis of different sources of data shows that dependent employment with full social security coverage is still the most dominant form of work although there are distinctive differences in the uptake between men and women in various segments.
