Agriculture in 1998: Rising Production, Declining Incomes. Development of Agriculture and Forestry in the Austrian Länder

  • Matthias Schneider

In 1998, the agricultural sector achieved a brisk expansion of its production in terms of volume, although its final output in terms of value failed to come up to the level of 1997. Incomes from agriculture and forestry once again declined in 1998 (after losses in the two previous years). The shrinkage of final output was due mainly to the collapse of the pig market. Agricultural incomes were further depressed by the scheduled reductions in degressive compensation payments introduced to bolster the "EU shock".
