Value Added of the Agricultural and Food Sector in Austria and an Update of the Public Value Report

While the workforce in agriculture has been declining continuously since EU accession, it has remained stable or increased in upstream and downstream sectors, especially in trade. As shown in a model analysis, an increase in demand for domestic food is accompanied by an increase in production in the agricultural sector and in the downstream processing sectors. This is associated with an increase in value added and employment in the upstream sectors and the economy as a whole. The effects are not equally pronounced in the individual Länder due to the different economic structures.
