The two most important changes today regarding resource use are firstly the growing international competition over resources, which is being fanned by the catching-up process of emerging economies like China and India. Secondly we are experiencing an unprecedented increase in prices for natural resources. Both changes produce a radically different economic environment for Europe, in which it can no longer be in a leading position similar to the one it had during the 20th century. Global long-term economic growth is restricted by the availability of natural resources. In the long run, a reduction of resource use is unavoidable. With the help of our new WWWforEurope DYNK model it is possible to research the consequences of resource use reduction and evaluate different political measures. It has become apparent that the regressive effects of some of these measures will need accompanying steps to limit the negative distribution effects.
