Austrian Imports from East Central Europe 1989/1992

  • Jan Stankovsky

Austrian imports from East Central Europe (CSFR, Hungary, Poland) rose by 48 percent between 1989 and 1992. Supplies of vehicles and consumer goods quintupled from a low level, these two commodity groups accounted for almost a third of total imports in 1992. The expansion of imports form the East has provoked sensitive reactions particularly in these markets which have so far been relatively well protected against foreign competition.
