Transformation to a Circular Economy

Performance, Industrial and RTI Policy Support

This short study provides evidence on technological developments in Austria that support the transformation to a circular economy. Such activities play – taking into account important limitations in measurement – only a minor role in the Austrian innovation system, both in absolute and proportional numbers. Nevertheless, technologically and commercially relevant development activities can be observed. A case study on the establishment of circular value chains in the field of lithium-ion batteries shows the importance of broad economic, social and RTI policy approaches that are necessary for a transformation towards a circular economy. In the necessary "whole of government" approach, the Council for Research and Technology Development can play an important coordinating role.
