Tourism Analysis 2021: Guest Nights at the Level of 1970

Despite Rapidly Rising COVID-19 Infection Figures, Positive Balance for Christmas Tourism in 2021

After a respite for Austrian tourism in the summer half-year 2021 with almost a quarter more overnight stays than in the first crisis-ridden summer season 2020 and a shortfall of only around 16 percent compared to summer 2019, the start of the winter season was again characterised by a lockdown in November and December 2021. Compared to the 2018-9 season, the need to catch up in the first third of winter amounts to a good 40 percent in terms of overnight stays and almost two-fifths in terms of nominal turnover. In the calendar year as a whole, after massive losses in 2020 (overnight stays –35.9 percent), demand in 2021 fell noticeably again (–18.7 percent), especially as a result of the lockdown from the beginning of the year to mid-May, and thus only reached about half the pre-crisis level of 2019.
