A Tourism Satellite Account for Upper Austria. The Economics, Methodology and Results 2016

Tourism is an important factor in the regional economy of Upper Austria: according to the regional tourism satellite account for Upper Austria computed by Statistics Austria and WIFO, in 2016 total spending on holiday and business trips, visits to relatives and friends and stays at weekend and second homes made up 3.66 billion € (+4.8 percent). From the total expenditures, 71.9 percent were spent by domestic visitors, 27.7 percent by foreign travellers and 0.4 percent on stays in weekend and second homes. In 2016, the direct value added including business trips amounted to 2.42 billion € (+5.2 percent; including taxes and subsidies), which was 4.0 percent of the gross regional product. The direct and indirect effects of tourism contributed 4.4 percent to Upper Austria's overall economy (+0.1 percentage point).
