Building Permits for New Housing Units in Austria

Following the massive decline in 2022, building permits will fall substantially again in 2023. The overall decline from 46,900 to 41,100 units (–12.4% or –5,800 units) in 2023 is particularly pronounced in the one- and two-family housing segment. A decline of 19.9% or 3,400 units to just 13,800 permits is expected here. In multi-storey construction, the forecast decline is somewhat weaker at –8.0% or 2,400 units. For 2024, the forecast models expect a stabilization, with an increase of 4.4% to around 43,000 approved units. In the area of detached and semi-detached houses, part of the decline from 2023 will be corrected (+1.000 units or +7.3%), and multi-storey construction will also stabilize somewhat (+800 units or +3.0%).
