Forecasts of Overnight Stays as well as Revenue and Real Gross Value Added of the Accommodation and Food Service Sector by Federal Province

First and Second Quarter of 2023

In 2022, tourism, which was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, has recovered significantly. There are regional differences in terms of overnight stays growth, revenue increases and value-added growth, indicating a return to pre-pandemic tourism trends. In the first quarter of 2023, there were still strong increases in all three indicators, especially in tourism-intensive regions and in city tourism (overnight stays +31.6 percent, nominal advance sales tax receipts +42.0 percent, gross value-added +16.9 percent). In the second quarter of 2023, growth in all provinces will decline significantly compared to the previous year, after almost all pandemic-related restrictions were lifted in the second quarter of 2022, leading to higher tourism demand. This implies a forecast increase in overnight stays of 6.5 percent, a rise in nominal revenues of 13.6 percent and a stagnation in gross value added of 0.1 percent.
