Turning Point for the European Union?

Video: European Election 2024 – Talk with Leading Candidates and Impulse from WIFO Director Gabriel Felbermayr
The Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU), the Austrian Society for European Politics (ÖGfE) and WIFO invited the Austrian leading candidates to a Europa Club discussion at the WU on 3 June 2024. More than 600 interested people came to listen to the politicians' discussion.

Prior to the discussion, WIFO Director and WU Professor Gabriel Felbermayr gave a keynote speech on the economic benefits of the EU for Austria: "Around 8 percent of our economic prosperity would disappear if the EU were to disintegrate, which is almost 4,000 € per capita. The net contribution to the EU budget, on the other hand, is no more than 150 € per capita."

WU Rector Rupert Sausgruber welcomed the guests: "Universities have always been places of discourse and exchange, so we are particularly pleased to have the opportunity to welcome the candidates to Campus WU so close to the election. Openness, integrity and appreciation are the core values of WU, and I hope that they are also the basis for living democracy in the EU."

ÖGfE Secretary General Paul Schmidt moderated the event. The panellists were:

  • Helmut Brandstätter (NEOS)
  • Reinhold Lopatka (ÖVP)
  • Evelyn Regner (SPÖ)
  • Lena Schilling (The Greens)
  • Petra Steger (FPÖ)
