Social innovations are part and parcel of cultural and social change and they gain particular importance in times of crisis. Nevertheless, definitions, causes and effects of social innovation are frequently unclear. Discussing social innovations becomes ever more urgent with the emergence of major challenges to society (poverty risk, marginalisation, an ageing society, financialisation, climate change, migration, social conflicts) in the course of ongoing technologisation and globalisation.
