Career at WIFO

As Austria's leading economic research institute, we owe our outstanding reputation to our employees. They are our most important resource, and WIFO relies on their experience and expertise. Our goal is to attract, promote and retain the best employees. That is why we offer them the greatest possible autonomy in the organisation of their work and long-term career prospects with flat hierarchies.

Culture und values

WIFO is committed to transparent and documented criteria for personnel decisions and strives for gender parity in all areas. It is committed to promoting equality for all persons at WIFO regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, religion or ideology, sexual orientation or physical or mental disability.

WIFO has an organisational culture characterised by respect, trust, recognition, appreciation, transparency and fairness between all levels. Flat hierarchies enable short communication channels, personal initiative and self-determined work as well as long-term career prospects as a specialist expert.

Benefits

Fair employment contracts, competitive salaries and a working environment that favours collegial cooperation between highly motivated and qualified employees across all departments make WIFO an attractive employer. We take into account the compatibility of work and private life through flexibility in terms of location and time and support well-being in the workplace with offers for workplace health promotion.

The promotion of continuous further education and training through a variety of measures, such as the possibility of a research semester or participation in international conferences, is a matter of course for us as a scientific institution.

Work with meaning: our employees contribute their expertise to overcoming economic policy challenges and work in an organisation that is also committed to achieving climate targets in its own activities.

As an economist, you have a sound education in economics and have completed or are about to complete a doctorate or PhD programme. In addition to project acquisition, management and collaboration, your most important tasks will include the ongoing monitoring of economic developments and participation in both the scientific-academic and economic policy debate (primarily through publications and economic policy advice). The communication and explanation of research results (especially through media work) round off your profile as a WIFO expert.

As a research assistant, you will work closely with the economists. Your tasks will include ongoing data management and analysis as well as collaboration on projects. You will provide support in the preparation of proposals (e.g., checking the data basis, preparing work and cost plans), project acceptance and implementation (e.g., processing and graphical preparation of data), reporting (layout, proofreading) and dissemination of research results.

As a doctoral candidate, you will work up to 30 hours per week for a limited period of four years in a qualification position financed by third-party funds. In addition to supervision by your university, WIFO will support and accompany you, for example with a mentoring programme, a separate budget for your further training (in addition to the opportunity to participate in internal seminars and training courses) and structured staff meetings. Participation in regular meetings of the respective research group ensures successful integration into the institute's operations.

As an employee in the service division, you will perform basic organisational tasks that are essential for the functioning of a research institute, be it in the areas of Data Science, IT, Surveys, Research Service, Library, Communication, Editing, Event Management or Facility Management as well as in Accounting and Human Resources Management.

Do you have any further questions? We look forward to hearing from you.
