Europe Must Pay Off

WIFO Director Gabriel Felbermayr's Plea for a Future-proof Europe
"Europe is in a better position than many people think. However, in order to continue to guarantee prosperity and security, the EU must bring tangible benefits for citizens and member states," said WIFO Director Gabriel Felbermayr on 29 January 2024 on the occasion of the publication of his book "Europa muss sich rechnen" (Europe Must Pay Off), published by Brandstätter Verlag.

Inflation, energy crisis, rising national debt, declining competitiveness, fragile external borders: The economic state of Europe looks bleak, even though a strong, dynamic Europe is the best guarantee for the prosperity and security of its member states, especially in geopolitically dangerous times. Added to this is the impression that European politics is bureaucratic and remote from its citizens, caught up in disputes over distribution issues.

According to Felbermayr, the European Union should "concentrate on its core competences and do what it does better. This is the only way it will find sufficient support internally and be heard externally." In his plea for a future-proof Europe, he shows why the key to this lies in completing the economic union and why we need to develop into a union of common public goods.

The book is part of the series "Auf dem Punkt" published by Hannes Androsch. Our world is undergoing profound and rapid change. The upheaval of society with its increasing complexity and the disruption of the political order are creating growing uncertainty. This makes orientation and new impulses all the more necessary. With this in mind, leading intellectuals and experts take a stand on the key issues of our time in this book series. In a compact form, they offer new perspectives on the path to a socially, politically and economically functioning world for present and future generations.
