The Consequences of a Sustained Low Interest Rate Policy

Parallel to the policy of low interest rates, the residential property price index has been rising steadily in Austria since 2008. But the real (entry-level) salaries do not follow accordingly. After his keynote speech at the series of events "WU matters.WU talks" on 14 October 2020, Ewald Nowotny discussed with WIFO Director Christoph Badelt and WU Junior Professor Miriam Rehm the consequences of a sustained policy of low interest rates.
Many young people feel that the dream of owning their own home is difficult to realize by their own efforts, despite cheap loans. Are we threatened by similar conditions in Europe as in Japan? Will the problem be further aggravated post-corona by the liquidity glut? And what can the individual do?
