danube@work: Digitisation and Work

Lecture by WIFO Economist Julia Bock-Schappelwein in Eforie, Romania
The Romanian Trade Union Confederation (CNSLR Fratia) is a partner of the Austrian Trade Union Confederation (ÖGB) danube@work project and organised a seminar on "Digitisation, Impact on Working Conditions, Negotiation of Contracts, Challenges for Trade Unions" in the Romanian city of Eforie from 18 to 20 June 2019. Austrian WIFO economist Julia Bock-Schappelwein and ÖGB project coordinator Tanja Vicas took part.

Julia Bock-Schappelwein spoke about digital change and its effects on work and society. She also pointed out the challenges arising from the structural change of the economy, demographic change, globalisation and social change.

According to WIFO, it is essential in such an environment to have a bundle of formal qualifications, competences and skills that distinguish human labour from robots or programmed algorithms. To achieve this, the basic skills required for initial training in reading, arithmetic and writing must be sufficient. At the same time, maintaining employability also requires an effective system of initial and continuing training for adults. In particular, people with formally low and intermediate qualifications come under great pressure from the changes on the labour market and need further training measures to secure their livelihood if they are to remain active on the labour market.
