The "Centrope – Middle European Region" was established in 2003 by representatives of the cities and regions of Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, West Transdanubia, Bratislava, Western Slovakia, and South Moravia. As an institutional framework for cross-border cooperation, it is supposed to improve the competitive capacities of the whole region and to contribute to the development of an integrated economic area in the long run. In the course of extensive analyses, WIFO has evaluated the status quo and development potential of this plan.
