Digital Transformation

Digitalisation is a major driver of change in the economy and society. It harbours both opportunities and risks. The thematic platform "Digital Transformation" bundles the research work of all WIFO Research Groups on this topic.

WIFO works on the topic of "Digital Transformation" from different perspectives, for example with regard to macroeconomic implications, changes in the labour market, operational innovations, regional upheavals or environmental impacts. The thematic platform "Digital Transformation" continuously bundles WIFO's work on this topic and thus promotes the exchange of ideas. By integrating the economic, spatial, competitive, social and ecological significance of digitalisation into the economic analysis, the effects and interactions of digital progress in the direction of the market, state and society are highlighted and made comprehensible. Central research topics are broadband infrastructure, digitalisation in the Austrian agricultural sector, the use of digital platforms in the corporate sector and the interplay of digitalisation, demographics and green transformation.

For example, a representative business survey conducted by WIFO for Austria shows that the majority of domestic companies already use digital platforms, particularly frequently in the areas of communication, information and advertising as well as human resources. The central motives for using them are saving time and money, improving the visibility and accessibility of target groups and strengthening competitiveness.
