Absence-from-work Report for 2012. Sickness- and Accident-caused Absences in Austria

  • Thomas Leoni

The absence from work report, that in 2012 appears in its fifth edition, provides an overview of absences from work due to illness and accidents in Austria. This year the report focuses specifically on the role of workplace culture for sickness absence. A theoretical section outlines the main transmission mechanisms between workplace culture and health, with a special focus on the role of psychosocial workplace hazards as determinants of stress-related illnesses. In the following empirical section data from the "European Working Conditions Survey" and from the "Austrian Workplace Health Survey" are used to provide evidence on the validity of the ERI model and on the impact of variables linked to workplace culture on workers' health outcomes.
