Third Report on Vienna's International Competitive Standing

Drawing on a large-scale, harmonised international database, the study analyses the findings (indicators) of Vienna's regional competitiveness and its determinants in a comparison of 65 European conurbations. Even when measured against this high-powered sample, Vienna's businesses are quite competitive, although there are risks, especially with regard to the labour market. It will therefore be a major challenge to find employment for a clearly growing population while productivity is high and improving. This requires explicitly growth-oriented location and structural policies which address deficits in the determinants of competitiveness and make use of strengths in the service sector in order to consistently extent the market beyond existing borders.
