FAMO – Monitoring of Skilled Workers. Regular Assessment on the Supply of and Demand for Skilled Workers in the Border Region Between Austria and Slovakia. FAMO I: The Supply of Workers in the Irregular Sector (Black Market). A Comparison Between CENTROPE Regions Vienna and Bratislava–Trnava

This study analyses the supply of workers in the non-regular sector (illicit workers) based on a survey carried out in households and businesses in Vienna and the western Slovakian area of Bratislava and Trnava as part of the project "FAMO" (monitoring skilled workers). In addition to estimating the size of the supply of illicit workers, the study focuses on which socio-economic factors determine a willingness to work illicitly as well as how business in Vienna, Bratislava and Trnava perceive this willingness. The result was that the willingness in Vienna to work illicitly in Austria is higher than in those regions examined in Slovakia. Above all very small and small businesses as well as sole traders and businesses involved in the building industry admitted that they are confronted with higher levels of willingness to work illicitly. The results show not only a considerable willingness in Vienna to work illicitly but also a relatively high tolerance amongst the population of illicit workers. This is especially the case when the supply and demand is between private individuals.
